Beginning with its rediscovery in the 19th century, Borobudur Temple has undergone numerous restoration projects and today stands as a massive, and breathtaking, monument in Central Java . Constructed in the 9th century, the temple consists of nine platforms stacked as a step pyramid, which forms a mandala shape from above. Our image features a few of the 72 perforated stupas found near the top of the temple. Within each of these bell-shaped stupas is a statue of Buddha.
